The Clever Deer and the Crocodiles
Once upon a time in a thick forest, there lived a young deer who was often ignored by the other animals. The deer was smaller, quieter, and didn’t look strong or brave. Many animals thought he was weak and not important.
One day, the deer heard about a beautiful grass field on the other side of the river. He was excited and hungry. But there was a problem: the river was full of dangerous crocodiles. No animal ever dared to cross.
The deer sat under a tree, thinking hard. “If I go into the river, I will be eaten. But if I stay, I will stay hungry and small forever.” Then, he had an idea.
He walked to the riverbank and shouted, “Crocodiles! I have a message from the king of the forest! He wants to know how many crocodiles live here.” The crocodiles were curious and proud. “Line up across the river,” said the deer. “I will count you by stepping on your backs.”
The crocodiles followed his instructions. The deer carefully stepped from one crocodile to the next, counting loudly. “One, two, three…” Until he reached the other side.
He jumped to the land and laughed. “Thank you, crocodiles! I didn’t come to count you. I only wanted to cross the river!”
The crocodiles roared angrily, but the deer was already safe. He ate the sweet grass and felt stronger and more confident.
Later, the other animals heard the story. They couldn’t believe it. “That small deer tricked the crocodiles?” they said. “He must be clever and brave after all!”
From that day on, the deer was no longer seen as weak. He was respected and admired by the animals of the forest — not because of strength, but because of his smart thinking and courage.
