Recounting Past Experiences
When we talk about past experiences, we are recounting. For example, a teacher might ask students to share stories about their last holiday or activities on Independence Day.
Ketika kita berbicara tentang pengalaman masa lalu, kita sedang bercerita. Misalnya, seorang guru mungkin meminta siswa untuk berbagi cerita tentang liburan terakhir mereka atau kegiatan pada Hari Kemerdekaan.
To recount these past experiences, we use Past Simple verbs. Verbs in the Past Simple form can be regular or irregular.
Untuk menceritakan pengalaman masa lalu, kita menggunakan kata kerja Past Simple. Kata kerja dalam bentuk Past Simple bisa beraturan atau tidak beraturan.
Regular Verb 🔗
Regular verbs form the past tense by adding ‘d’, ‘ed’, or ‘ied' to the base verb.

Irregular Verb 🔗
Irregular verbs do not follow a fixed pattern when forming the past tense. You need to memorize their past forms.

Using Time Connectives in Recount Texts
When telling a story about past experiences or events, we use words to show a sequence. These words are called time connectives.
Saat menceritakan kisah tentang pengalaman atau peristiwa masa lalu, kita menggunakan kata-kata untuk menunjukkan urutannya. Kata-kata ini disebut konjungsi waktu.

SMP Merdeka’s School Parade
Last month, SMP Merdeka held a fun school parade to celebrate Indonesia’s Independence Day. The teachers and student council planned the event, and it became one of the most exciting events in the village.
The parade started in front of the school at 7:30 AM. Students wore different costumes. Some wore traditional clothes from different parts of Indonesia, while others dressed as farmers, fishermen, or traditional dancers. The school marching band led the parade, followed by students carrying red-and-white flags.
As the parade moved through the village, many villagers came outside to watch and cheer. Some even gave snacks and drinks to the students. The parade passed by the village hall, mosque, and rice fields. Students performed dances and sang songs along the way.
The villagers were very happy and proud. Many took pictures and clapped as the parade passed. They said it reminded them of the village’s unity and culture.
After more than an hour, the parade ended back at the school. Students enjoyed traditional snacks like klepon, lemper, and es sirup. The headmaster gave a short speech to thank everyone for joining.
The students and teachers felt tired but very proud and happy. It was a day they would always remember.

The celebration started with a flag ceremony. We stood in silence to remember the heroes who fought for Indonesia. After that, we played many games. I joined the sack race. It was very funny because we all fell down while jumping. Then I joined the cracker-eating game. It was hard to bite the cracker because it was hanging on a string. I also watched other games like tug-of-war and balloon dancing. Everyone was laughing and having fun.
Perayaan dimulai dengan upacara bendera. Kami berdiri dalam keheningan untuk mengenang para pahlawan yang telah berjuang untuk Indonesia. Setelah itu, kami memainkan banyak permainan. Saya mengikuti lomba balap karung. Lucu sekali karena kami semua jatuh saat melompat. Kemudian saya mengikuti permainan makan kerupuk. Sulit untuk menggigit kerupuk karena tergantung pada seutas tali. Saya juga menonton permainan lain seperti tarik tambang dan menari balon. Semua orang tertawa dan bersenang-senang.

I really enjoyed the day. I didn’t win, but I had a great time with my friends and neighbors. I felt proud to be Indonesian. It was a fun and special day that I will always remember.
